Description

In-person Workshop, Falkirk, Scotland

Tutor: Rhona Duffy

Date: 10am – 4pm, Saturday, 13 June 2026

Price: £95 (includes tuition, use of tools, materials, and tea/coffee/snacks)

Suitable for aged 16+

In this one-day workshop, you’ll create a picassiette mosaic for your home or garden (you might even be able to make two, depending on the complexity of your design). “Picassiette” or “pique assiette” (a French term meaning “stolen from plate”) incorporates pieces of broken pottery, bone china, plates, cups, bowls, tiles, shells, and other discarded items in your work. Rhona also will open up her stocks of high-quality stained glass, mosaic tiles and gems for you to incorporate too. We encourage you to bring along any bone china that you’d like to incorporate into your design – Rhona will be able to advise you about its suitability for outdoors.

Choose your own motif to work from, it can be anything that inspires you …  a house number, a favourite flower, an initial or something else – you choose!  The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to mosaics, or if you’ve been to a previous workshop and would like to further develop your skills, you’re very welcome!

You’ll learn about the materials, adhesives and grout that are suitable for exterior mosaics plus how to use tools to cut mosaics and glass, and put all your learnings into action. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where, not only will you develop or hone your mosaic skills, but you’ll also have an enjoyable day out!

This is also a great workshop for team building and private parties – if you’d like to book for a private event, contact Rhona at rhonaduffy@mosaicandglass.com

About your tutor

Rhona Duffy is a picassiette mosaic artist who uses broken pieces of pottery, glass, bone china, and ceramics, often incorporating recycled items in her work. She has a contemporary take on mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules – she particularly enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. Rhona’s work is an antidote to the challenges facing us in today’s world, which aims to bring peace and joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona has taught regularly at the Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community – and the Central Scotland School of Craft in Dunblane for several years. She now teaches mainly at Studio 164 Falkirk. Her work is available to buy at Made in Stirling. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years. Check out some of her work below.
